Steam distribution systems utilizing saturated steam are potential candidates for reducing the steam system operating pressure. Steam systems can have large excess capacity in boilers, valves, pumps, and piping. This can also be true for systems designed for peak winter conditions. Steam pressure reduction is the lowering of the steam pressure at the point of use for distribution to better match the required heating or process load at the time of need. Within practical limits, pressure-reducing valves (PRVs) will adjust the pressure at the lower levels to controlled set points to better match the specific heating or process load at these times. This means that most of the benefits from pressure reduction occurs due to the differential pressures between the peak system demand and the minimum demand.
Automatic pressure reducing valves can have a positive impact on savings in a wide variety of vertical market settings and is often overlooked in ESPC and ESA projects. Markets with the greatest opportunities are; C&I, Housing, or Hospitality that typically are served by high pressure district steam or a high pressure microgrid.
To recognize areas of efficiency opportunities in facilities where steam pressure is normally maintained at a level that is not needed for most of the days throughout the year resulting in decreased efficiency and increased operational expense.
Understand and quantify the savings that can be experienced by installing pressure reducing valve sand digital controls packages that automatically modulate the steam pressure based on building heating load demands.
